Lake Moananui had fallen into a state of disrepair with an accumulation of silt and numerous structural issues. Once drained, the excess silt was used to create islands within the lake to encourage and support safe nesting for birds.
With an empty lake, repairs could be identified and undertaken. A silt trap was created at the inlet to collect silt and the outflow structure was upgraded to improve lake level management and safety. An automated lake level monitoring system was also installed.
Hard landscaping included a 2.5km perimeter path with two wooden bridges, exercise stations, three age-specific playgrounds, picnic areas with BBQs and an off-the-leash dog exercise area.
In addition to the bird life supported by the lake, it’s kept stocked with trout and hosts the fishing club's famous annual children fishing competition.
