Location

Leith Place Tokoroa

The project included the clearance of the site and the construction of five single uni-sex toilets linked by a covered walkway, with a carved soffit in the pattern of the Southern Cross - in recognition of constellations significance as the primary navigation tool for the communities Māori, Pasifika and European ancestors.

The toilets are contained within wooden “finned” cylinders ranging from seven to nine metres in height and feature dramatic night lighting. Various seating and grassed areas are incorporated into the site as well as shelter for intercity bus users. A new car park with improved vehicle movements was also constructed with the slipper pavers being replaced with an exposed concrete footpath.

Outcome

With meaningful design and execution, this project has gained national media exposure and become an iconic feature (and convenience) for travellers of SH1.
