When creating such a functional piece of infrastructure, consulting with the target user is critical for success. In the case of this new skatepark the key group to engage with was the local skaters who were instrumental in developing the final design.
To make way for the skatepark and to help with safety including both visibility, and to reduce leaf fall (slippery surface) most of onsite trees had to be removed. Council retained a few mature trees and planted additional, better suited tree specimens once the skatepark build was completed.
The installation also features a pump track - suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters as well as a basketball court featuring spring-loaded hoops and a new car park to service the facility.
Today, it’s unlikely you’ll ever drive past the skate park or BMX track and not see local youths making the most of the facility - testament to the quality of the collaborative design process undertaken by Ted and his team.
The park's location and visibility from SH1 make it a showpiece of which the community can be proud.
