This project was in response to the South Waikato District Councils need to upgrade their wastewater treatment inlet works, denitrification treatment processes, phosphorous treatment processes, build a new sludge digester and increase the ultraviolet treatment process.
As Executive Manager ultimately responsible for the delivery of three water services, including all planning, consenting, operations, maintenance and capital projects - the pressure was firmly on Ted to deliver a favourable outcome.
Ted recommended to Council that we should seek resource consents for all four wastewater treatment plants simultaneously, so that all the options regarding wastewater management could be considered simultaneously. Additionally resource consent applications were submitted at stage improvements to all wastewater treatment plants to spread the financial burden.
The hard work undertaken upfront meant that the Waikato Regional Council were able to grant the 35-year resource consents with the conditions agreed between Council and Iwi, without the need for any public hearing.
As a result of Ted’s proactive leadership and decision-making council was able to bring forward the denitrification planned in about 10-years’ time and utilise designers and contractors already on-site, undertaking the digester upgrades.
